“In the beginning, God…”
It all starts with God. We need to know God personally. The more we know of Him, the more we know of ourselves.
To know the Creator is to know the creation.
From creation we can know that 1. God is in control, 2. God is creative, 3. God is a redeeming God (and so much more! The list is never ending)
We learn that we are 1. A reflection of our creator (created in His image), 2. In subjection to God, 3. Have been given responsibilities and stewardship over the rest of creation.
Remember when God created us, He breathed lifed into us! All other creation was spoken into existence!
I love verse 7! The thought that God himself breathed life into us always gives me chills.
“then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
And today, as I am getting ready for a wedding, the rest of chapter 2 is very fitting.
Genesis 2:18, 23-25
Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.
Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
The Lord created us to be relational people. Not just in love and marriage but in friendship and community. The relationship between man and wife is symbolic of Christ and the church. And as the church we are to be unified.
Ephesians 4: 1-6 talks of our unity in the Spirit. We have newness of life in Christ (Eph 4:22-24) and have been made in the image of God. Accepted into the beloved (Eph 1:6)
Remember that God has breathed life into us. If we have accepted Christ, we are adopted into his family! Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called! (Eph 4:1)
The devil uses the same tactics with us today as he did with Eve in the Garden.
v1 “hath God said”
He wants us to doubt God and to trust in ourselves. He appeals to our pride.
v5-6 “…then your eyes shall be opened and ye shall be like gods knowing Good and Evil. And when the woman saw the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes…
Eve took her focus off God and what He said and who he is. We do the same today. We doubt his goodness and we do what will glorify us.
Rom 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
After Adam and Eve sinned, they hid themselves from the Lord. We do this in our guilt and shame. And God loves us anyway and provided a way : Christ.
1 Cor 15:21-22
For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
